Sounds about right. I've never played this one, though a friend owned Super Ghosts and Goblins on SNES. My general thought was, "Well, this improved a LOT on the NES version, yet it's still fundamentally not fun." I played it again on Switch in the recent past, and my thought remained the same. Just based on the screenshots, I imagine the same is true of the Genesis game.

As for never having played Genesis Ghouls n' Ghosts, maybe I've said this before, but I have this feeling that the post- Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis (i.e., the competitor to the SNES) is effectively a different console from the pre-Sonic Genesis (the competitor to the NES). Games from that prior era were just irrelevant in the peak years of the 16-bit war. My guess would be that if you look at the vast majority of US Genesis owners in 1994-95, they picked it up post-Sonic, and they didn't buy a single pre-Sonic game, likely never even rented one. So having a game like Ghouls n' Ghosts in your collection is kind of like owning a TurboGrafx 16 or Neo Geo. Someone somewhere must have done it, but I never met any of them in person.

Between this game and Ghosts n Goblins, I do prefer Ghouls n Ghosts. It’s a better looking game and at least Arthur can now shoot directly down and up so he’s slightly more capable. But his armor is still paper mache and he’s still not very mobile, so it’s still a pretty hard game.
