The Retro Gaming Archive has Upgraded to the Sonoran Videogame Society
The Substack Formerly Known As...
Hey everyone!
Thanks for bearing with me through those last couple of strange posts. You know the ones. And hey, if you don’t, you can read them right here!
Part 1
The Death of the Retro Gaming Archive
Dylan stood on the hard asphalt, surrounded by stuffed creatures. The scorching sun wasn’t invited, but he came anyway, ready to burn anyone who dared call an outside meeting at 2pm.
Part 2
The Uncertain Birth of a New Creation
Before you read this post, I recommend reading “The Death of the Retro Gaming Archive” first.
If you didn’t read those or you’re just plain not interested, surprise! I’m rebranding the Substack, sort of!
This Substack name is changing from Retro Gaming Archive to the Sonoran Videogame Society. Beyond that, I’m not sure.
My hope/desire is for this Substack to become more of a community focused on a variety of people who play games, rather than just one person who plays games (me, I am the one person).
What would that look like, you ask?
I have three ideas and they are…
1) COLLABORATION
I’d love to collaborate with other Substack writers, whether their subject matter is video games or something else altogether. I’ll be personally reaching out to certain writers soon, but if you’re interested, shoot me a direct message and we can go from there.
2) INTERVIEWS
I already have one interview with a well-known individual in the gaming industry coming up soon, and I’d love to get more on here. Again, different perspectives, different insights. Plus, I personally love listening to interviews, so conducting them sounds really fun to me.
3) PLAYING GAMES TOGETHER
Personally, I think it’d be cool if, at the beginning of each month, I suggested a game that the whole community could play together if they want. Something that is easy for people to find and access (like the games on Nintendo Switch Online, perhaps – just one idea). As the month goes on, you could all send me your hot, mild, and extra spicy takes on the game via direct message or chat, and I could compile them all into one article.
I’m open to other ideas as well, but these are all I have for now.
This rearranging of a one-man solo newsletter into something more communal focused is not anything I’ve ever attempted before, and as such, I presume I’m going to make mistakes.
Bottom line: I don’t know what I’m doing, but I feel the need to try and do… something different.
While I’m working out what the Sonoran Videogame Society will eventually look like, I will continue to write posts that will, honestly, look a lot like the posts from Retro Gaming Archive. Only under a different banner with a lot more cacti.
I also acknowledge that everyone who reads my Substack is busy and has a lot going on. Jobs, families, trying not to scream into the void, etc. If few are interested in the ideas presented here or just in the concept of an online Substack gaming community, that’s totally fine. I’ll continue on as before just with a different name!
Anyway, I hope this provides some clarity. More to come, Lord willing!
Thank you all for continuing to read, comment, and all-around support what I’m doing here, I appreciate it more than I can say!
